Grilled cheese is a simple yet delicious comfort food that can be made in just a few steps. Here’s how to create the perfect grilled cheese sandwich.
Ingredients
- 2 slices of bread (your choice: white, whole grain, sourdough, etc.)
- 2 slices of cheese (cheddar, American, munster, or your favorite)
- Butter or mayonnaise
Instructions
- Add Butter: Add a few tablespoons to a pan on medium to low heat
- Add the Cheese: Once the butter is mostly melted, place one slice of bread in a skillet over medium heat. Add the cheese slices on top of the bread. If you’re using any additional ingredients, add them on top of the cheese.
- Top it Off: Place the second slice of bread on top, butter-side up.
- Cook: The key to making the perfect crispy, golden grilled cheese is low and slow. Keep the heat of the burner on medium-low until the bread is golden brown.
- Add Butter: Add a few more tablespoons of butter before flipping the sandwich. This way both sides of the grilled cheese get nice golden brown.
- Flip: Carefully flip the sandwich using a spatula and cook the other side until it’s golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
- Serve: Remove the grilled cheese from the skillet, let it cool for a minute, then slice it in half. Serve it warm, perhaps with a side of tomato soup for dipping.
